In 1989, ROGER (58) buys his daughter, EMILY (14), a guitar. Emily dreams of being a musician. One day, JANET (49), Emily’s mother, takes Emily out of Roger’s home. Roger’s alcoholism worsens, and he dies.

Emily self-harms and drinks. She sneaks out to perform at a pub. Emily is heckled off the stage. Janet and Emily’s STEP-FATHER (50) catch Emily and burn all of her musical possessions as punishment. Emily is sent to a convent school, run by REVEREND MOTHER (30s). Emily gets drunk with her dorm-mate, JESSICA (teens). Reverend Mother hits Emily with a ruler and has her head shaved. Emily continues to clash with the nuns, and they discourage the other students from spending time with her.

Emily sneaks out of the school and heads to the village nearby. She meets MADELINE (19), who, unbeknownst to Emily, suffers from a heart condition. Emily notices that Madeline has a guitar. Emily plays for Madeline. The two become friends and start making music together. Madeline teaches Emily about the town's history and how her ancestor was executed for witchcraft. Madeline and Emily use some of the lyrics her ancestors wrote down for their music.

One night, Jessica catches Emily stealing her comics....
