In 1928 Florida, a young white man finds a Black worker who is being attacked by his employer, the head of a turpentine fortune. He helps the man take shelter and fight back against the corrupt leaders.
In 1928, an eighteen-year-old boy helps an abused Black turpentine miner escape his sadistic employers, sending the rich proprietor and his sadistic henchman on a manhunt, and bringing both enemies and expected allies out of the woodwork.

In East Ridge, Florida, 1928, MATTHEW MORGAN (18) is a shabbily dressed young man with a prominent birthmark on his face. His father, NAT MORGAN (66), is a farmer, and his mother is dead.
SILAS JENNINGS (42) is the town villain and abusive captain of the local turpentine camp. His son, BUCK JENNINGS (19), bullies Matthew. CHARLEY MOTT (40) is the head of the turpentine camp guards.
Matthew works at the Alard Hotel and develops a romance with MARTHA ALARD (18), the wealthy and pretty hotel heiress with a kind heart. ETTA RAWLINGS (52) makes floral arrangements and gives Matthew food.
At the turpentine camp, Matthew sees ENOCH YOUNG (20s), a Black man, being attacked by Mott and Jennings, who accuse him of trying to run, though he wants to go to town to get news of his son being born. Beating workers is illegal, but they violently attack him. Enoch is also indebted to the turpentine camp due to their pay structure.
JESSE TATEM (55) is the deputy sheriff, and Matthew timidly tries to get information about the abuse of workers at turpentine camps. DORLENE JENNINGS (40s), Silas’s wife, is an unlikely source of kindness for Matthew, providing him with food and support.
