1990s. After his father’s death, BEN (30s) leaves Nebraska for Miami, taking only his truck and a few belongings with him. An innocent Midwestern man who worked at a corn processing plant, Ben is out of place in Miami’s thriving Latinx communities, but soon starts to make his place. He lands a job as a calling card salesman for INTERNATIONAL CONNECTIONS, run by Cuban-American RAY (40s). But when he’s swindled by a local businessman, his transgender building super, ROSA (mid-30s), encourages him to soldier on, and the two become friends.

Meanwhile, SUYAPA (mid-20s) leaves Honduras for America to escape her abusive uncle. En route, she befriends MARICELA/”MARI” (25). Together, they travel to Miami, where Suyapa secures a job at BODEGA LATINA, run by NELSON (early 60s). One day, Ben visits Bodega Latina to sell his cards and runs into Suyapa. She injures her head, and Ben applies first aid. Touched, Suyapa convinces Nelson to buy Ben’s cards. A spark ignites.

As the weeks pass, Ben and Suyapa meet more frequently, and their flirtation evolves into a romance. Ben joins Suyapa’s English study group, learning more about the difficult pasts that immigrants leave behind....
