A teenager with autism is kicked out of his home when he reveals to his parents that he is gay. Forced onto the streets, the teenager moves to New York City, where he struggles to use his musical talents to survive.
A gay, autistic teenager is unfairly judged by his peers and his own father, which leads to him being rejected by his home and community and setting out into the wider world to find himself.

Locations include various houses, apartments, and hospitals as well as a neurologist’s office, elementary school, high school, New Jersey turnpike, suburban road, truck, New York City streets, cemetery, subway station, subway car, coffee shop, Tompkins Square Park, restaurants, diner, café, bar, office, and alleyway.
In 1999, young BENJAMIN COHEN (5) is playing in his yard under the supervision of his parents DANIEL COHEN (35) and ELIZABETH COHEN (32). The parents notice that Benjamin is disturbed by loud sounds and has difficulty focusing on them.
They soon take Benjamin to DR. HENDERSON (46), who confirms that Benjamin has autism. Elizabeth is accepting of her son, but Daniel has some difficulties in coming to terms with his special needs child and how that might make their lives different from his expectations.
Thirteen years later, Benjamin is now in high school. He is a withdrawn outsider. Daniel has become strained in his patience and is often at odds with his son. In his sole form of expression, Benjamin buries himself in songwriting, often fantasizing about writing music for a boy at his school named Max.
At school, Benjamin is bullied by JASON (18) and his cronies NATE (18), KYLE (17), and BRANDON (17). MAX comes to Benjamin’s aid, scaring off the bullies. Afterward, he shows kindness to Benjamin, and Benjamin’s infatuation with him grows.
Benjamin then decides to perform a song at his school’s prom. He gets on stage and sings a love song, making direct eye contact with Max in a revealing...
