In 1944, in Saipan, Japan, CHIEKO (6) tries to protect her little brother, AIKO (8 months) from bombs. After an explosion, Chieko discovers that her father and other siblings, save Aiko, have died. Chieko finds her mother injured and bleeding out. Chieko’s mother tells her to flee with the baby. Chieko reluctantly does so. Her little brother dies soon after.
Eventually, Chieko is found and taken to an orphanage where she bonds with TOKIKO (6), a little girl whom Chieko knew before the bombings. AUNT KAMIKO (40s) arrives and takes Chieko to her home. Aunt Kamiko is unkind to Chieko, so Chieko runs away and goes back to the orphanage. Aunt Kamiko slaps Chieko and locks her in a closet when Aunt Kamiko learns what happened.
Chieko is then sent to live with AUNT USHI (40s), her husband, UNCLE TOSHIRO (40s), and their daughter, SUMIKO (13). In Aunt Ushi’s house, Chieko begins to practice her sewing and design skills. Years later, Sumiko runs away to Tokyo with HAJIME (18), whom Sumiko wants to marry. When Aunt Ushi learns that Chieko knew of Sumiko’s plans to run off with Hajime, Aunt Ushi becomes angry with Chieko.
