A curious young man in a dystopian society discovers electricity and crafts a way to use it to help usher his people, including a woman he’s forbiddingly falling in love with, into their own free society.
In the future, the world loses its understanding of modern technology, and men and women are separated from one another and denied individual freedoms. When a street sweeper rediscovers electricity, he secretly plots to use this knowledge to improve his lot in life and to protect the young woman he is forbidden to love.
In a dystopian society, an intelligent young man struggles with the repression of his aspirations and identity, but once he comes across the long-lost technology of electricity, he hatches a plan to use it to impress the society's elders and raise himself up to his desired lot in life.

In the near future, humanity loses its comprehension of modern technology. Men and women are split into two camps and forbidden from interacting outside the palace of mating. Upon reaching adulthood, individuals are assigned a job.
One day, a group of men bring THE SAINT (40s) to the city square. The Saint has used a mysterious, Unspeakable Word. He is sentenced to death and burned alive with city dwellers, including EQUALITY 7-2521 (10), watching.
Years later, Equality (15-20) attends school alongside INTERNATIONAL 4-8818 (15-20). Equality’s teacher asks the class about the sun. Equality gives a scientifically accurate answer. Equality’s teacher accuses Equality of lying. No one in the class defends him, and Equality backs down from the truth.
After school, Equality and International discuss how they are about to reach adulthood and have their vocations assigned to them. International wants any job but street sweeper. Equality wants to become a scholar. International then reveals that he stole a piece of charcoal from the Home of the Artists. He uses it to draw but is caught.
The next day, when International is assigned his job, he is made a street sweeper as punishment. Another boy Equality’s age, UNION 5-3992 (15...
