June 1956 San Francisco Borders: JACK KEROUAC (34) arrives at Desolation Peak to be a fire lookout. Addicted to all kinds of things, including opioids, Jack wants to use the time to detox and earn enough to help his mother, all of which he tells GINSBERG (30).

In 1926, JACK’s (6) older brother, GERARD (9), dies. By 1938, JACK (teens) has become a skilled running back. Jack’s father pressures him to go to Boston College. Jack decides to go to Columbia University. There, Jack sees a group of bullies harassing a street musician, ALLEN GINSBERG (16). Jack tries to stop the bullies. Jack and Ginsberg become friends.

During a game, Jack breaks his leg and will never play again. He’s introduced to painkillers. Ginsberg makes a romantic move on Jack, and they get kicked out of school.

In 1945, Jack, Ginsberg, BURROUGHS (30), and NEAL CASSADY (19) have begun using drugs together. Burroughs writes Jack a stolen prescription for pain medication. Jack tries to get some of his writing published, but nothing takes. Jack’s father dies. Ginsberg manages to get Jack’s novel, “Town and City” published.

In 1956, Jack struggles to stay clear and destroys his medical kit. Another medical kit and a new battery are dropped...
