The true story of Jermain Loguen, who fled slavery, became a leading Abolitionist, and led a city’s revolt against the federal government in order to protect a fugitive slave.
A slave runs away from his plantation with others, and helps The Underground Railroad in freeing slaves and protecting them from Slavecatchers.
A man enslaved in Tennessee makes a risky attempt to escape to freedom. He establishes a life as a reverend in Syracuse, and helps to defend other runaway slaves, and himself, from slave catchers as the fugitive slave act endangers them all.
A determined slave risks his life to escape to freedom. As a reverend in Syracuse, he helps run the Underground Railroad and defend another fugitive from a slave catcher.

About 40% in Mansker's Creek, Tennessee, including: a distillery, farm, creek, house, barn, cornfield, woods, mountain cave, and smokehouse. Additional scenes in Kentucky, Indiana, and Canada.
A light-skinned Black man with red hair, JERRY HENRY (49), works at Morell’s Cooperage.

At the Syracuse meeting house, a huge gathering of agitated townspeople join in protest, and a Black minister, JERMAIN LOGUEN (38), speaks to the crowd and calls for the people not to return him to bondage. Jerry is taken away by COPS. Jerry is brought to JAMES LEAR (40), a brutish slavecatcher.

In Mansker’s Creek, Tennessee 1823, CHERRY (32), a Black woman, works on the Logue farm distillery as Jarm (10) — Jermain Loguen as a child — sweeps. Jarm goes to the creek, and on the other side, he sees SAM (20) fishing. Jarm slips and is sucked away by the current, and Sam saves him.

In the horse barn, MANASSEH LOGUE (32) attends to a mare giving birth to a colt. Jarm sees slaves, including Sam, being tormented by ZACHARIAH BETTS (40), who paddles them. Betts brutally kills Sam, and the slaves mourn him. Jarm returns to the scene of Sam’s execution, and is haunted by the sound of Sam’s cry.

Years later, Jarm, now 20, hears the voice of MARIA (23), Jarm’s older sister. In the field, a drunk and angry Manassah gives Jarm a shove. Manasseh shoves the sharp end...
