90% takes place in the Arctic Circle, with specific areas including sea ice, helicopters, and ice pit. 10% takes place in a hospital and house, as well as on the International Space Station and in a spacecraft with laboratory, sleeping pods, common area, and docking area.
In the year 2029, NASA astronaut ANNA TYLER (late 30s) works on a NASA space station laboratory. Anna calls her husband JOHN TYLER (late 30s), once a fit firefighter, now alarmingly gaunt with patchy hair due to his chemo treatment. John asks Anna whether the glass is half full -- whether she is optimistic -- but she is cynical.

Anna works on a paper “An Update on Horticultural Possibilities” for publication in the Ecological Journal of Space Migration. She reads articles discussing the dire state of the world, with rising CO2 levels and suicide rates, and riots over gas masks.

In a flashback, Anna, cross tattoo still on her arm, cares for her MOTHER, who coughs and retches black gunk. The DOCTOR tells her that her lungs are too infected and there is nothing they can do.

In the present, NASA astronaut and ecologist MIKE CAMERON (early 30s) floats and chats with Anna. He boasts about his samples, and talks about severe acid rain on earth. He tells Anna that his wife KELLY CAMERON (early 30s) has found a suitable surrogate for them. Anna talks about her mother and John and how their cancers were caused by pollution.
