After being arrested for driving under the influence and suspended for a year, a brilliant high-powered defense attorney finds herself bought out by her firm. Jobless and tempted to use drugs again, she instead seeks cases helping those who can't afford good attorneys, and soon comes upon the case of a black man wrongfully accused of killing two cops.
After a disgraced defense attorney, who lost her license to practice law for a year, is forced out of her firm, she starts taking cases pro bono to help those at risk of being railroaded by the legal system.

Fiercely talented and very expensive attorney DEBBIE POWELL (?) successfully defends a college rapist, and turns the tables on prosecutor JOHN when he appeals to her conscience afterward.

Debbie does coke at a bar with her friend TOM. She needs more drugs and goes with KIM to seek some out. The women are pulled over high, and just when Debbie has almost gotten them out of a citation, Kim runs and both women are arrested. As a result, Debbie’s license to practice law is suspended for a year.

Over the year, she goes to AA and still goes to work at her firm HJS, where she works as a consultant. Associates take her deft advice on their cases. She’s planning on going right back to trying cases as the year expires, but partner BARNABY lets her know the firm is buying her out. She’s furious, though she leaves with millions. Debbie is tempted to get high.

Meanwhile, reporter PETER and JUDGE JEMILA talk about the strange case of two dead cops that’s been in the news.

Debbie does a speaking engagement at a school, where she runs into John and embarrasses him with her skills in front...
