A pandemic is spreading quickly throughout the world that changes its victims into monstrous beings. A family decides to travel to a small town to wait out the virus, but the virus quickly finds them at their door.
A mild mannered college professor returns to his home town to shelter from a deadly pandemic, only to discover that he must learn to embrace his animalistic instincts if he wants him and his family to survive.

A news host talks about mutants that are popping up all over the US, using very aggressive language to convey that they need to be stopped and that they can't get better. A young teenager, KEVIN, watches.

Kevin's mother BETH calls Kevin's brother BILLY for dinner, we see that Billy has mutated. Beth asks Kevin to go get Billy for dinner. Billy kills Kevin. Beth discovers her son's body, she runs for her gun safe to try and defend herself.

We follow MICHAEL, his wife TESSA, and their kids SUMMER and FAITH as they drive into the countryside, visiting Michael's hometown. They're stopped by cops on the way in and get their temperature checked. There's more talk of the virus.

Michael goes to a store and gets a replica key made for his dad's house, it's revealed that his dad was mentally ill before he died.

Michael and his family go to the house, it's more of a mansion, and was renovated by his paranoid father to be very secure. His mother died suddenly when he was young and his dad never got over the fear generated by that death. There is no cell phone reception inside the house.
