Jobs, Saving Mr. Banks
Present day 1991 with interspersed flashbacks to 1985 and 1986. A flash-forward to 1992.
Majority takes place in an idyllic Ohio town, Universal Press Syndicate building, Bill's home. A few scenes in a grocery store basement, orange beetle car, hotel room, plane, atrium and lecture hall.
In NYC, BILL WATTERSON (30s) is informed by LEE SALEM (40s) that bootleg Calvin and Hobbes t-shirts circulating are unacceptable, stealing money belonging to Bill- and Universal Press. Lee coerces Bill into making their own shirts but Bill makes it clear he wants none. Lee tells him he'll start licensing without his content and he has one week to change his mind or lose his job. Bill goes home to his wife MELISSA WATTERSON (30s). He trudges to his studio to stare at the blank white page. His latest sketch of Calvin and Hobbes comes alive in his mind but Bill can't get them to do anything and throws the board across the room...
Chagrin Falls, Ohio 1985 and BILL (26), designs grocery store ads. His car doesn't start and MELISSA (20s) pulls up offering a ride. At his house Melissa beams over his sketches, especially one of a boy named Marvin and his stuffed tiger. After an endearing run-in at a bookshop where she works, she offers another ride. A RED-HEADED BOY (6) and his stuffed rabbit knock over a display of books as Melissa sneaks out to meet Bill. The boy and his MOTHER (?) walk parallel to them as Bill overhears...
