“The Peak” opens on an image of RICHARD (60) falling off a mountain while climbing. The image cuts to SLOANE (24) driving to the psychiatric hospital. Here, she meets Richard, her father who is clearly struggling with his mental health. They talk about Sloane’s progress in medical school and how Richard is struggling with his room, particularly the view of Lytta's Peak.

Four years later, Sloane is completing her program for neurosurgery. During her 24-hour shift, a delirious Sloane decides to snort some Adderal to help her stay awake. This results in violently-shaking hands that betray her during surgery when she accidentally cuts the patient's spinal cord and paralyzes them for life.

Sloane’s discusses with her therapist her worries about slipping into psychosis. The therapist advises her to push past her fear and acknowledge that she is not her father. Sloane decides to confront her fears by hiking Lytta's Peak.

Sloane rests on the couch with her boyfriend, STEPHEN (28, pampered lifestyle). He convinces her to go on a hiking trip with him and two of his friends. Sloane says she will go, but only if they go to Lytta’s peak.
