Seeking to transform himself through bodybuilding, a scrawny man starts a new life at Muscle Beach. As he struggles with failure and basic human connection, he descends slowly into madness.
A beginning bodybuilder descends into a dangerous spiral when he discovers that his trick for strength is murder.
A small and lean-bodied loner sets out to become a body-builder based on his want to completely change himself, but as his mind is dominated by instability and failure, he slowly descends into a seemingly irretrievable madness.

1985. Closed-off CALEB (28) has just moved to Venice Beach to train as a bodybuilder. He finds Flexion Fitness, a legendary gym that he knows about from magazines, and convinces BARRY (62) to let him train there in exchange for free labor. Barry asks about his past, and Caleb reveals that he was rejected from the army for a neurological eye condition and just moved from Nebraska where he was a pet feeder. Barry tells Caleb that he will not train him until he proves that he is ready.
Homeless, Caleb sleeps in the gym’s storage room while earning money on construction sites around Los Angeles.
While training, helpful CHAUNCEY (38) sees Caleb and comes over to give him a tip. Chauncey takes Caleb out to a restaurant and gives him more advice, including to start taking ballet classes. Chauncey tells Caleb that he is now a personal trailer, and invites him to his gym. He also tells Caleb the story of NAZAR KOZEL (20), a highly successful Ukrainian bodybuilder whose confidence Caleb envies.
Caleb skeptically attends a ballet class and becomes infatuated with a ballerina, IRENE (24), who he sees dancing by herself.
At the gym, a bodybuilder, BUCK (32) rudely starts using a bench...
