Georgia: cotton plantation, big house, outhouse, barn, slave cabins, blacksmith's cabin, wooded area with a well, small underground hatch
On a plantation in Georgia in 1802, GRACE (30, dark skinned) and her daughter LENA (11, brown skinned) sleep in a slave cabin. As Lena starts to levitate off of the ground in her sleep, Grace wakes up and brings her down. In the morning, they go out to the cotton field. JOHN THE OVERSEER (30s, white), watches them. Another slave HATTIE (30s?) sees her daughter and son being traded in the distance by MASTER HENRY (30s, white). She runs towards him, pleading, but a male slave holds her back. Grace pulls Lena close.
That night, Grace and Lena go to the kitchen in the Big House. ALICE (late 50s, light skinned) stirs meat in a big pot. In the next room, the master’s wife, ELIZABETH (30s, white) yells at a slave HELEN (19, caramel skinned). They move into the kitchen where Elizabeth grabs Alice’s hot spoon and presses it against Helen’s face. Lena’s eyes are locked on Helen and Elizabeth as the bowl and spoon near her shakily levitates. Grace nonchalantly pushes the items down.
The next night, CLARA (20s, black) comes to Grace and Lena’s cabin, and informs them that Lena is being moved to the house....
