The Comanche CHIEF (45) finds his son NACONI (14) sketching a picture of a fort, and Naconi describes it using an English word he should not know. Disappointed in his son’s disengagement from his own culture, the Chief makes him to go on the hunt for buffalo before Naconi feels he is ready. On the day of the hunt, a young TENEWA (15) needles her way into the hunting party, even though she is not supposed to go. While storming a buffalo stampede, Naconi gets caught up in the violent herd and is knocked off his horse, where he is almost trampled if it were not for QUAN (40), the Chief’s second in command, running in to save him.

Ashamed at his failure, Naconi sneaks away from camp in the middle of the night, vowing to run away. His little sister ETENIA (8) sees him leave and decides to follow, and when Naconi finds out he sends her back, determined to set out on his own. Later, Naconi spots Etenia’s horse with an arrow in its flank, and realizing something’s wrong, retraces his steps to find Etenia captured by the Tonkawa tribe. Outnumbered and outmatched, Naconi rushes home to get help....
