95% takes place in and around NYC. Bank. Lower Manhatten streets. Synagogue. Precinct. Store. Casino. Small apartment. Large Apartment. Office. 5% takes place in Canada.
In a depressing 1869 Lower Manhattan MARM (48) argues with a WEALTHY BUSINESSMAN (30s) and DORCY (22s). They accuse of her stealing and selling stolen jewelry. Marm denies all claims and eventually strikes a deal with the gentlemen. The disgruntled accuser spits in Marm's face.

Marm returns home to find her ill hsuband, WOLFE (50), worse off than when she left him. DR. SCHMIDT (30s) diagnoses it as tuberculosis and reminds Marm that she'll need to settle her medical bills by next week or he can no longer serve her.

Marm tries to sell her family's prized items in the Thieves' market but her goods are stolen and she's forced out by GRADY (32), one of the prominent thieves. On her way home, she stops to tend to comfort a crying SOPHIE (18) but Sophie cons her instead.

Wolfe convinces Marm to take his life to relieve her of finical woes. She agrees and holds firm that the kids will not be involved in taking care of finances. Marm returns to Sophie and offers her a partnership. Sophie steals and Marm sells. They agree. Marm teaches Sophie everything she needs to know. The two try their luck at a jewelry store with success. Sophie is...
