About half in a lake house and surrounding forest around Lake Gerard, New Jersey, including on a rowboat. Other half in New York City, mainly Manhattan and Brooklyn, including several apartments, the subway, the Central Park Reservoir, a therapist's office, a bar, and a Chinatown fish market. One scene at a house in the crappy part of a seaside town.
Sarcastic LOLA (30s) and her condescending father DON (50s) take a trip to the lake house of Lola’s late mother. Lola and Don bicker. Lola tries to tell Don about how a former babysitter assaulted her, but he refuses to take her seriously.

Later, Lola rows along the lake alone, slightly bloodied but at peace.

Lola cooks Don’s heart over a fire. Her ex-boyfriend ART (30s) calls, and Lola goes to pick him up from the bus stop. While Lola cooks dinner, Art approaches her sexually. Lola refuses him, but he starts to kiss her anyway. She changes her mind. They have furious sex.

By night, Art has disappeared. Lola crosses his name off her planner.

The next morning, Lola’s yuppie friend MICHELLE (early 30s) arrives. Lola feeds Michelle Don’s heart during an awkward dinner. Michelle is with Lola’s ex-boyfriend, and has been for some time.

Brown sludge takes over the kitchen. Lola pretends to call a plumber.

Lola and Michelle take a trip together on the lake. Lola teaches Michelle to row. They reach a floating dock and fall asleep.

Lola wakes Michelle and brings up their graduation party. Lola accuses Michelle of being...
