NELLIE (12) walks through the streets of Chavez Ravine in Los Angeles, 1951, holding a suitcase. She hears a gunshot go off, but it's not uncommon that time of year.

Nellie arrives home to a New Years Eve party. In the middle of the night, CARLOS (20s) is thrown out of a vehicle in front of Nellie's house, his body badly bruised. Nellie rides with her grandmother, TOYPURINA (60s) and Carlos in a truck on the way to an infirmary.

Nellie heads to school the next day despite her brother being nearly comatose. There, she meets a boy named WILL who is being bullied. They become friends, and she takes him to her uncle's, MANUEL (40s), bar. They do homework in her aunt's, EVA (40s), office, when they see two burly white men walk into Manuel's office.

FRANK WILKINSON (30), with the housing authority, arrives at Nellie's house to give his best wishes to Carlos, which scares Nellie into thinking that he is going to get them kicked out of their own home.

Nellie and Will go to the nearby shake shack and have malts and fries. On their way home, they notice an abandoned, boarded up house. Nellie tells Will that it's...
