JOHN GARRITY (38) returns to his family after being away for unknown reasons, and tension is high between him and his wife, ALLISON GARRITY (36). Their son, NATHAN (7), is excited to see his father. Nathan has an insulin pump for his diabetes, but John doesn't recognize it because he's been gone, which annoys Allison.

Strange things happen, a white noise machine glitches and John sees neighborhood dogs barking and fleeing in the middle of the night, but he doesn't know what's happening. The next day, military helicopters whir by onlooking neighbors and people receive FEMA alarms on their phones. While John talks to neighbor KENNY FITZPATRICK (40), DEBRA FITZPATRICK (39) talks to Allison disapprovingly about John moving back in, and it's revealed that he had an affair. There's an announcement about an approaching asteroid that will hit earth in four days, and some people were selected randomly to be relocated to an underground bunker the government has been building.

Allison argues with John about going to her father's house in Maine, where he has his own bunker and says he just doesn't want to face him. Military men arrive at the Garrity's house to tell them they were chosen, and they're given a duffel...
