We open as NINA ESMER (28) talks about how technology has helped the dating industry, allowing women to vett potential dates before going on a date. But Nina wants to go one step beyond. She wants to give another layer of protection, in the form of a stand-in.

She presents the idea as a joke and it's revealed that she's at a party with her friend, JULIAN (27) and her sister, HARPER (26). The three briefly talk about how Nina was dumped by her long-time boyfriend, BRAD (28) who took control of the company they founded together, and left Nina with little in the way of funds. Julian and Harper want to see Nina succeed with her newest invention, but Nina insists it's not ready yet.

When Nina goes home, it is revealed that she wasn't kidding. She has created a prototype for an android that perfectly resembles the prettiest version of the user, that she intends to send out as a test dummy on dates.
