Present, on the road in the western United States, in Los Angeles (homes, school), Boulder (hotel, book store, restaurant) and Telluride (houses, ski slope, forest). Also has some scenes in the Mexico countryside.
JANE (40s) records messages to her son, WYLIE (9), on an iPad. Jane keeps files of songs and moments, planning to surprise Wylie with them on a future date. Wylie loves fashion and dance, and is cared for by his nanny and best friend EMANUELA (28).

Jane takes Wylie to the ballet with her and her friends, KHALIL (30s) and DAN (40s). The next day, Jane reveals to Emanuela that she is dying from stage four pancreatic cancer, and tells Wylie that she plans to have him live with Dan and Khalil after she passes. Dan and Khalil start to express concerns about caring for Wylie and dealing with his co-dependent relationship with Emanuela, and Jane realizes that they cannot properly care for Wylie.

Jane researches potential families for Wylie among her friends, identifying a few candidates. She, Wylie, and Emanuela decide to embark upon a road trip to visit the different families, and let Wylie choose his future home.

Along the way, they stop in Jane’s college town for her to do a book signing. At the book shop, Jane encounters LEVI (40s), a man from her past. Levi invites them to eat at his barbeque restaurant, and tells stories...
