An old woman in her 60s opens the door for a maintenance man saying he needs to fix the pipes. The maintenance man hits her in the head, knocking her out cold, and drags her away.

Detectives FARRON (30s) and SULKO (30s) are introduced at a crime scene making judgements on a case that's not even theirs. It's obvious that the detective in charge at the scene isn't going to investigate it fully due to racial prejudice, the murdered one being a black pimp.

Farron greatly disagrees and a fight breaks out. Sulko warns him not to take things too personally and that it's just "Boston." The superintendent speaks to them about if afterward, scolds them, and places them on a new case involving rape.

They go and check out the crime scene and notice that there was no forcible entry, similar to another rape/murder case. Farron makes the assumption that they are linked, but Sulko warns him not to get too excited.

At Farron's home, his wife is speaking to a priest about her marriage, complaining about how focused Farron is on his job. Later, Sulko comes to Farron's house in the middle of the night, saying that...
