LUELLEN SMILEY (LILY) (42) is embarrassed at work when her colleagues hear on TV that her deceased father, ALLEN SMILEY (58, 61, 70s), had set up the murder of his best friend, Ben Siegel. She quits her job and leaves to live with a friend, FLORENCE (70s). There, Lily begins visiting places from her childhood – where she lived with her father, where Ben’s murder took place, and begins talking to people from her childhood. Frustrated with her father’s mysterious life and the toll it has taken on her, she starts seeing a psychologist, ANN (60).

As part of Ann’s therapy, Lily is forced to confront her childhood and young adult memories, where she is seen in the ages of 13, 15, 17, 21, and 29. After her mother’s death, Lily lives with her father and is quickly lost in the mysteriousness of her father’s life. Allen rules Lily’s life with intimidation and anger, stripping Lily of her carefree childhood. Her social life is affected when her close friends come to know that her father is a gangster. However, she manages to start a relationship with BILLY (late teens) until her father forbids him from seeing her....
