JOHANNA “HANNIE” SCHAFT (24) attempts a hit on a prominent Nazi, WILLEM ZIRKZEE (47), in an alleyway in Haarlem, The Netherlands. However, her pistol jams and Zirkzee shoots wildly while fleeing. Hanna lands the hit and kills him, but not before she is hit in the leg.

We then flash back to seven years earlier, 1938. Hannie’s hair in the first scene was jet black, but now it is distinctively red. Her parents, PIETER (53) and AAFJE (53), emotionally send Hannie off to college in Amsterdam.

Hannie has trouble making friends at school. She goes to a meeting of the Amsterdam Female Students Association, where she befriends SARAH (18). Sarah studies linguistics, but Hannie wants to go into politics. Later on at Hannie’s apartment, Sarah views Hannie’s favorite book, “The League of Nations,” where on the title page, written in the left hand corner, there is the name “A. Schaft.” Hanna decries Hitler, and Sarah admires her ambitions to promote world peace.

Some time later, Sarah and Hannie celebrate Hannie’s becoming the President of the “Gemma” society, a society working towards world peace, a pamphlet for the group showing their motto, “Gemmare e minoribus appentinus” –– “From small things we aspire towards the...
