In the present, Grace wakes up and listens to voicemails from her mother, CAROL, as Grace cries. She eventually goes downstairs to see her grandparents, JANE and ED (70s). They inform her that her dad is coming to see her, which upsets her.

MATT (38) arrives to whisk Grace away. She begrudgingly goes. He tries to be pleasant but she refuses to engage. He eventually brings up her mother’s death and asks her why she refuses to go back to school. She tells him not to worry. Matt continues to ask how she wants to spend their day together.

He follows her to her favorite rock-climbing gym, the only thing she likes nowadays. He and the muscular trainer, JASON (20s), are impressed by how well she does on the toughest course. Jason offers to take them on a real rock-climbing trip that Saturday. Grace is eager but Matt doesn’t want to.

In the car, Grace tells Matt how she hates having him drop in on her every few years and that he isn’t a part of her life...
