STEVEN SPIELBERG (5) sees “The Greatest Show on Earth” with his dad ARNOLD (35). Water explodes through the movie screen and a shark circles them in the water. SPIELBERG (27) awakes from this nightmare in a boat cabin. He comes to the boat house and speaks with JOE ALVES (38), a carpenter who’s trying to fix the ORCA, the boat in the movie. It has a three foot hole in it. Alves tells Spielberg they’re going to get shut down.

One year earlier, Spielberg goes to the offices of the Zanuck/Brown company and spots a copy of the manuscript for “Jaws.” He steals it and leaves before RICHARD ZANUCK (38) comes out to see him. Spielberg reads it and resolves to make the movie. Zanuck, the producer, finds Spielberg at home and tells him another man has been tapped to direct the movie. VICKI (23), Spielberg’s girlfriend, gets annoyed because he blows her off again.

Zanuck has lunch with PETER BENCHLEY (33) and DAVID BROWN (57). DICK RICHARDS (37), the would-be director, arrives late. He frequently refers to the shark as a whale, which annoys Benchley. Spielberg meets with SID SHEINBERG (38), President of Universal, and LEW WASSERMAN (60), its CEO. They want him to make “Jaws.”...
